 India's 'Eye in the Sky' Is Now Fully Combat-Ready — Netra Mk-1 Gets Final Operational Clearance

There's a quiet but powerful shift happening in India's skies — and it has been two decades in the making.

India's indigenous Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system received its Final Operational Clearance (FOC) on Thursday, marking the culmination of a development journey that lasted over two decades. So, What Exactly Is Netra?

Think of Netra as a flying command centre — a highly sophisticated aircraft that sees everything happening in the sky, from enemy fighter jets to drones, missiles, and surface threats, long before they get anywhere close to Indian territory.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at its Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in Bengaluru, Netra is designed to provide the Indian Air Force (IAF) with real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, enabling it to monitor enemy activity from the skies and support military operations. The system is mounted on an Embraer EMB-145 aircraft platform and carries an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar that can detect and track targets at ranges exceeding 250 km, covering a 240° arc around the aircraft.

What Does FOC Actually Mean?

There's an important distinction here. FOC signifies that the platform is fully combat-ready without operational limitations, unlike the Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) granted back in 2017, which indicated only basic functionality. (Deccan Chronicle)

The clearance was formally awarded at the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in Bengaluru, nearly eight years after the system was granted its Initial Operational Clearance in October 2017. Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, welcomed the milestone, saying the programme had delivered all the capabilities the IAF had envisaged. (Bharat Shakti)

In plain terms — Netra has passed every test, met every requirement, and is now cleared for high-intensity conflict operations.

Already Battle-Tested

This isn't a system that's been sitting in a lab. The Deputy Air Force Chief confirmed that Netra has already proven its capabilities during the Balakot airstrike in 2019 and during Operation Sindoor. (Deccan Chronicle) Being indigenous, officials noted, gives India a significant strategic advantage — no dependency on foreign suppliers, no technology restrictions, and full control over upgrades.

Why This Matters for India's Air Defence

At present, the IAF operates only six airborne early warning platforms — three Netra AEW&C aircraft and three Israeli Phalcon AWACS. Service estimates indicate a requirement for at least 18 aircraft to sustain simultaneous operations along the western and northern fronts. Until now, India had relied on foreign radar technology, but the Netra system is now completely indigenous (India TV News) — a landmark achievement under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

What Comes Next?

India isn't stopping here. The government has cleared the development of 12 advanced variants, including six Netra Mk-1A and six Netra Mk-2 systems. (Deccan Chronicle)

The Netra Mk-2 programme, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security at an estimated cost of ₹19,000 crore, will utilise six Airbus A321 aircraft and carry a more powerful indigenous radar with a detection range exceeding 500 km, along with substantially enhanced onboard processing capability. The road from a drawing board in Bengaluru to a fully combat-ready, indigenous airborne surveillance system has been long — and it's a road India walked largely on its own. With Netra now fully mission-ready, the Indian Air Force has a sharper, more self-reliant eye in the sky.
